Back in the day someone did some fancy photography of the rear of the car measuring the difference between the height of the rear at speed versus standing still.

If I remember correctly, they calculated something like 100 lbs of downforce at 100mph which is significant.

Plus I agree that it just doesn't look as good without the spoiler.
