white vinegar is the simple form, no complexities. Also, if you have hard water never never put it in your window washer tanks. Lesson I learned from Palm Springs, worst water for spots on the planet. too late, i used the apple cider type.
as to how it worked:
it took off most of the water spot's mark (i can easily see through the windows again) but the outlines of them are still there. basically, it now looks like a meager water spot vs. a thriving grandiose variety.
my method was to dump undiluted vinegar onto a cloth, scrub away like crazy, wipe down with another cloth, and finally go over the area with windex.
i didn't bother with the paint.
