It may default rich if it actually stops working, but I've never seen one actually stop working. They usually just go haywire enough to cause a lean condition on initial start-up. It may run rich after the car is warmed up due to it not picking up the temperature of the coolant correctly.

Probably would help your gas mileage a bit also.
