There are products in the form of heavy duty crimp fasteners/joiners, used in yacht rigging etc, which may enable you to repair, or have repaired, the break with the cable in place. Try and find someone who uses such crimps. Small yacht rigger or someone electrical who handles heavier style cable.

Alternatively The inner of a Bowden cable, as a replacement is a good idea for sure, as thoughtfully suggested above. Bicycle brake, car boot release,
etc.

Be sure the fix is possible without spending mega bucks.
