The speedo gear that rides off the Diff has a key that holds the gear on. You can't pull the speedo shaft through the top of the diff without getting the gear off the shaft first. I did it with the trans out of the car.
You may be able to remove the speedo gear by pulling the Passenger half axle and the axle retaining ring from the gear box (not a fun job in the car).
