Yeah I knew all about the trunk lock lever on the latch but like an idiot didn't try that first. I just figured in 10 years I've never accidentally triggered it, so why would I now?
But yeah, that was it.
Most likely since I only had one trunk strut when I closed it the trunk was slightly skewed and the latch hit the plastic trim piece with the opening in it on the way down..
Sorry for making a whole thread about it, but maybe it will help someone who isn't aware of the switch.
Or someone who isn't aware of what meat by-product John's fingers most resemble.
