A couple of years ago I asked an Illinois Highway Patrolman if barefoot driving was illegal, and he said, "We don't exactly promote it, but no, it's not illegal." When I was younger (hey, it was the '60's) I hardly ever wore shoes in the summer and I've pretty much always driven shoeless (and sockless) on long trips.
