I talked to Teresa today (claret '92).
Apparently, when she was diagnosing (?) her electrical problem, she messed with several fuses, which probably explains the FWD light.
She said, as far as she knows, the transmission was rebuilt, rather than replaced. It's also had a recent rear bearing replaced.
The mechanic is still working with the problem (it dies, and then won't start, due to a dead battery). They thought maybe the security system was malfunctioning somehow, but I think they've got it narrowed down to the alternator now. If that solves the problem, the car should be a winner.
