Mother's aluminum cleaner is easily available and cheap. If you can get your hands on some, get some Britemax aluminum wheel cleaner. It's a two step that works pretty sweet, actually better than anything else I've used for bare aluminum. I've detailed a LOT of cars, and I have yet to see its equal.
What is IDEAL is getting a small (I have a 3") orbital buffer and going to town with aluminum polish and sealer. However, if you don't have a buffer you can do it by hand, it just won't look as good. Or you could just use a drill and get the power ball, or whatever it's called.
GreenMarine: I'll have to remember that ardex. We just bought another Cyclo (BEST buffer ever) from autogeek.com last night, and we were looking around for anything else that might catch our eye. We'll have to add that to our order!
