No, not quite. The "brightness" button is on the rhs stalk so far as I know. If you have the lights on in fog or rain, the panel lights automatically dim so you don't get glare at night.

When driving with the lights on in daylight pushing this button brightens up the aircon lights etc so you can see them OK.

In lifting up the lever you accidentally moved the dimmer control. Dimmer control for the gauges is a ring on the left stalk a couple of inches in from the tip of the stalk. It will rotate towards you or away from you. This affects the brightness of the dials.
