I believe you have to be very careful and then make your own educated decisions on how to deal with it in those cases where you do find you have a sex offender in your neighborhood. Turns out we have one in our neighborhood. At first - as the father of a 12 year old girl and a 8 year-old girl - I was seriously pissed off, as I didn't know it when we bought our house. Then I did a little more "digging" and found out that the boy in question turned out to be underage, as was the girl, at the time of the offense. Girl's parents caught them together and he was charged. He still lives with his parents until he goes off to college. While this does "temper" things, I still make sure my girls don't go near their house alone (kinda falls under the "wave as you drive by" rule)
