You are on the right track but best of all is to mount the speaker rigidly direct to the door panel which IS the speaker baffle. It is not done this way OEM because of assembly costs. Your may have to have an extra spacer/stiffener panel between the door panel and the speaker which can assist in positioning and concealing the through panel fastenings which then do not have to align with the holes in the speaker.

Do some reading if you are not aware of the exact importance of a baffle in respect of speaker performance. Simply listen to a speaker unmounted and in open air and compare. You will quickly get the picture.

To protect the speaker from moisture hang a square curtain of plastic sheeting over the back of the speaker taped or glued to the panel acroos the top edge, This should be otherwise free and not sound or air tight.
