Disconnecting the battery will turn the light off temporarily. I've done it on my OBDII Outback several times. The code, I believe, is stored on non-volatile memory so even without power the code will be stored as a "recent problem" until it is erased by a OBDII scanner. You realize of course that if you do have a real problem the light will evetually return after so many driving cycles.
