Even my 4 year old knows that PS is nothing more than a grandma power robbing feature. Of course we raced it w/o PS and like I said once we removed it our times went down! The steering rack is most likely the same original rack that was in it a month ago.
Seriously we never had a steering issue simply because we got up to speed and stayed there. We had talked about going to an electrical pump such as the one out of the XT or maybe a saturn but really never had an issue without it aside from in the pits.

As far as I know the steering wheel is 13" so it doesn't make it easier to turn either.
And the weight that was lost... was due to the radiator going supernova. But don't fret - Blue Devil saved the day  .
