Looks like that was the ticket after all.
Went to the car wash, had a scary moment when I thought it was going to stall at a light, but I think it just needs a tune up somewhere.
Just for good measure I turned it off and on again in front of my garage this time. Started right back up, seems to be running normally aside from an occasional pop from the exhaust.
