Hey, I've been a "Car Talk" fan for years (but I don't remember the caller you mentioned). Seems to me the guys generally tend to suggest detergents or additives—if they do at all—as a shoulder-shrug "can't hurt" first step to troubleshooting. I personally believe that a car that's consistently idling poorly and missing has an electrical or mechanical problem that isn't likely to be helped by any sort of additive or cleaner.

I understand that the intake of an SVX can get pretty gunky and suppose that might impede performance ever-so-slightly, but I need someone to explain why this would cause a stumble or miss.

If my cars are typical, the fuel system gurgling you hear is normal.
