I suspect they're gaining in polularity with younger owners becasue they're ridiculously cheap, and fear economics will decimate the ranks in the immediate future. Those that don't end up wrapped around a tree will soon break and be parted-out becasue the cost of repairs will exceed their "market" value.

I saw my beloved '68 Mustang twice after I sold it: Once in a parking lot, some kid sitting there mindlessly blipping the throttle (I wanted to snatch the keys away from him), and again, not long afterward, sitting behind a local business, front clip mangled from a major collision. So it goes.
