Racing fuel? Are you serious? Why? Higher octane does nothing to enhance performance; it simply prevents detonation in high-compression racing engines.

I've kept meticulous records on fuel consumption for years and have recorded no difference in economy -- zero -- between running pure 93 octane (premium in these parts) and EconoSludge. Maybe it has to do with driving style; I go pretty easy on the old gals, generally speaking, but do like to let 'em stretch their legs from time to time, once they've warmed up.

Never mind economy: The old Legacy I owned sounded like it had marbles in the cylinders if I dared feed it anything other than premium.

As to brands, I've been driving old cars for 30+ years and have always bought the cheapest fuel available, and I've never experienced a fuel-related problem excepting a sudden-and-complete fuel pump failure in an '86 GL wagon at 180,000-something miles. I fault age and miles, not chunky gas.
