Automatic transmission failures in the early models (1992-1993) were caused by a fine screen filter installed in the transmission cooler, which was located inside the radiator. Debris from normal wear would build up and clog the screen, reducing or stopping automatic transmission fluid flow, thus killing the transmission through overheating. Subaru added the auxiliary ATF filter to these cars to prevent this from happening.
If you have the original radiator (which is doubtful) you still have the screen installed. Subaru just back-flushed the screen to remove any debris and added the filter to collect it before it could enter the cooler again.
Details of the Filter campaign can be found in the Technical Services Bulletin HERE
Subaru later corrected this by removing the screen entirely from the cooler in the radiators. If you ever had your radiator replaced, the screen is no longer there.
