There is no longer really a reason to buy an AMD chip. Unless you really just like AMD better.

If you want the best chip out there, it's Conroe. the E6300 can be had for under $200.

If you really want to save money, the Pentium D 805 is the only logical choice. $99 on Newegg.com, and it can be overclocked to 4ghz on air cooling. At that speed it smokes everything available short of the Conroe.

Intel chips are easier to find and much cheaper second hand than AMD.

AMD will be releasing it's new line soon, and i'm sure they will have an answer for Conroe's speed. But there's no way they'll have an answer for Conroe's power/watt ratio. Intel is back in the game for good.

All that being said, i'm looking to buy a Presler chip right now. The Pentium D's are power hungry and run hot, but they are unstoppable workhorses when setup right. I like Conroe but the 975X boards are just too expensive right now.
