You are cruising at 50 in 4th gear. When the rpms seem lower, the torque converter is locked forming a 1:1 or so ratio with the transmission (someone fact check the ratio).
When the rpms seem higher, the TC is not locked, usually due to it not attaining optimum operating temperature of 150F degrees or higher.
