while I wouldn't say its a good idea to tune by ear, atleast on turbocharged cars its possible to troubleshoot by ear.
9:1 is super "watery" almost drowned sounding and will often start having rich missfire issues.
10:1 is merly watery
14.7:1 is very thin, highpitched with minimal power
13:1 is high and thin compared to the desired 11.5:1 many people tune turbocharged cars to.
