The wire you're talking about runs from the circuit board and should be soldered to the metal strip, that touches the ring holder. The ring holder and ring, are actually what act as the transmitter for the fob. That's why they suggest that when you press the button on the fob, you do so with the key dangling toward the ground.
The battery you'll need is a GP27A or equivalent. Two per pack at Radio Shack for about two bucks.
