Forget the external, I'd recommend replacing your internal 12Gig with a 120, 160 or 200GB hard drive and replacing your CD burner with a DVD burner. If you shop, you should be able to get a 120 and a DVD burner for a few bucks more than an external drive.
Then you can not only rip everything, but also backup 4.7GB worth of data at a time in case you crash.
