Actually, the insurance company's goal is to "make you whole." What this means is that they are obliged to compensate you for the value for the loss; i.e. the amount necessary to take the vehicle to a body shop and professionally restore it to pre-loss conditions.

The long and the short of this is: they're going to compensate for the amount needed to get your car fixed at a body shop. If you decide to cash-settle, you can get a fender from a third party and pocket the extra money. It's neither illegal nor immoral, as their obligation to "make you whole" by restoring the value of the repairs to you has been met.

Just a thought.
