OK. Good Question. I don't know WTF the cable is (your guess is a very logical one) but I do know that that area around the ashtray and stereo emits A LOT of HEAT. All the time. If I put coins in the ashtray, drive for 30 mins, then retrieve them, the coins are HOT!!
This can't be good for the Stereo system.....
Is this heat from the transmission?
