Yes, this is technically a repost of my earlier thread, but I had confused two separate things into a single issue so I wanted to start fresh. Here's what's going on:
A few weeks ago I started hearing a howling sound. Thinking another wheel bearing was going, I didn't worry about it much. However, I noticed it didn't get better or worse when turning the wheel one way or another. That didn't seem to fit in with the symptoms of a bad wheel bearing to me. I decided to take it in to have it checked out. The tranny fluid is fine and the rear diff. is full. The front diff. was empty
but that's a separate issue as you'll see. I did fill it up with mobile 1 75-90 synthetic.
Ok, so now for the important info:
1. The howling is happening upon deceleration, most loud between 20-40 mph
2. It's gotten much worse in the last few weeks. It was quiet at first, now very loud hum/howl
3. It does not happen when accelerating, at all.
***4. Putting the fwd fuse in makes the sound go away completely (or at least I can't hear it anymore, so it''s possible it is there but much much quieter)! This is why I don't think the front diff. is the issue. refilling it didn't change a thing.
5. FWD fuse in = no sound, FWD fuse out = howling
6. The sound seems to be coming from the driver's side
so...What could be making the sound that's no longer engaged when the car is in FWD mode?
