Binding?
I had one that quit working so I started to take it out to see what parts I needed. In the process I discovered that one of the electrical boxes had been bent upward causing it to catch on the moving part of the seat. Bent it back down and the seat has worked perfectly ever since. I don't think I would have ever discovered the problem without having the seat part of the way out.
