I recently had a shredded Alt/PS belt. Mine was due to a bad crankshaft pulley. The rubber was completely seperated, the outer ring came off as soon as I removed what was left of the belt. The AC belt was free floating between the crankshaft pulley and the timing belt cover. The Alt/PS belt was on the AC grooves of the crankshaft pulley.

Obviously if your crankshaft pulley is bad it's not as bad as mine was because I think you would have said something about it.

Once you get the belts off check your crankshaft pulley. Grab ahold of the outer ring, (make sure the engine is cool . . . ouch!), there should be absolutely no movement unless you're applying enough pressure to turn the engine.

If you have to replace the crankshaft pulley, the hardest part of the job is finding a replacement. You can use a crankshaft pulley from other models of Subarus. The actual work involved is minimal. Use the search feature to find more information.

Good Luck,
Dan
