Tough Nut To Crack

I was working on changing the front axles in my 98 Legacy and would you know it the nut wouldn't come off. I had a ½” breaker bar and a 3 foot pipe that has been used successfully on several axle nuts in the past but on this one the breaker bar started to break. The ½ impact I have would not budge it either.

So I was thinking, what the heck am I going to do? So I looked at the new nut and saw where the threads were and figured I would try to drill it and expand it. I used these new (to me) cobalt drills that are made for drilling stainless steel. I saw them at Harbor Freight and figured it was worth a try. The drills worked real nice drilling the nut with reasonable effort. Much better than the old bits I usually struggled with. After that I banged on it with a chisel and a punch to expand it off the axle.

There is a picture in my locker if you want to see it.

The axle nut for a Legacy is the same as the SVX.
