Those crappy thermal-type register receipts wont last, regardless of storage method. About all you can do is photocopy or scan those.

The O'Reilly Auto Parts outlet here (maybe everywhere) still uses a pin-feed, dot matrix-type printer for their receipts. Those are much more enduring. My mechanic uses good old ballpoint on plain paper, printed work orders. (Too bad his handwriting is all but illegible.)
