Incidentally the engine brain controlled each cylinder bank independently and could momentarily shut one side down to lessen "shift shock" in hard acceleration.

OK, the quote here also explains why replacing my O2 sensors all of a sudden caused my shifting to be so smooth. I never mentioned that here cause I felt like it had to be some sort of coincidence and I would look like an idiot making a connection between the two.
But I swear, I replaced the O2 sensors, and my shifting became velvet smooth during normal driving. You can barely tell it's shifting.
Before then, it would "grab" the next gear.
