The tether is actually pretty tough, I don't think we've seen many reports of it breaking. Most people who have had problems have just had bent or broken masts, often from running through automatic car washes or very high speed runs on the highway.

You guys might want to consider updating your how-to's to include just the mast removal procedure at the beginning of the document, so people don't end up spending an hour disassembling their trunk for no reason.
