Hybrids and electric cars don't make good economic sense for many, but I believe the prevailing issue is reducing the volume of imported petroleum by decreasing gasoline consumption. Most electricity (in the U.S.) is generated by burning coal. Pollutes like hell, but we have enough to outlast us all. Trouble is, even with gas approaching three bucks per gallon, most folks are like me in figuring it makes little sense to go spend thousands for late-model fuel efficiency just to save a $5-$10-$20 each week at the pump. That's a lousy mindset for conservation, but an economic reality.
