1. Do you have coolant?
(had to ask)
2. Does you're fan turn on?
3. Is the top hose (return hose) hot? Can you push it in while the car is running and then feel a wooosh as the fluid passes when you let it go? This will tell you if your thermostat is working.
If you answered yes to all of these things then it is probably beyond you're abilities so take it to the garage very very soon.
A head gasket going is gonna be real expensive if you keep driving it like that!!!
