I had to replace my factory muffler and did so with another factory one, i replaced my resonator with a stainless magnaflow resonator, the big factory cat with a high flow catalitic (actually i put in the resonator and high flow cat as they had been taken out by a previous owner...a high flow cat offers better flow than a y pipe...and the resonator creates scavenge effect), and have straight drop down pipes instead of an cat on each side.
With this set up my car is still very quiet and the tone is awesome. Sounds like a supercar quality sportscar that's attempting to be quiet rather than a rice burner that's attempting to be loud. I highly recomend it.

I wouldn't have minded going with a setup like that but my stock muffler was pretty much shot (and it was spraypainted red). I will say that the magnaflow does not give the car any "fartcannon" quality
