The length of the wire is an important factor and in general the shorter the wire the quicker it will melt and open the protected circuit. It is generally stated that this should not exceed nine inches.
The blowing of the fuse link, i.e. the melting of the wire, constitutes a severe fire hazard which must be taken into account and protected against.
