Manufacture recommends it do to compression. The compression by todays standard is average, but by 1990's standards is relativly high. I had no trouble running 89 when mine was stock. I believe the Stage 1v4 has a second set of fuel and timing MAPs that will allow you to run regular, if you have it switched to the correct setting.
