Make sure the trans shifts into all gears and that the half axle stubs or wheels move when you turn the engine over (I realize you will be turning manually). Listen for any grinding. Pull the gear oil drain plug, stick you finger in and feel for any large chunks or anything out of the ordinary suck as a broken tooth off the gear. Some tiny particulate metal shavings will be normal.
A component DS has a universal joint in the middle. Look at one end of any Subaru drive shaft where it connects to either the rear end or the transmission. Both of these ends utilize a u-joint. If you want a component shaft you're looking for one that has this style joint in the middle.
