I had a 2000 and a early 2003 that the HG went on. The Phase 2 blocks leak externally vs the phase 1 internal leaks though.
The 2000+ has a stop leak additive that stops most head gasket leaks as long as it is added with every coolant change.

Yeah they used paper gaskets, then changed to the composte gaskets like the SVX has, then changed to 3 layer metal gaskets.... Silly Subaru trying to cheap out on HG's
