I've always been told there should about 1/2" of slack in the belts. When you measure the slack you are suppose to measure it in the spot where the belt runs the longest from pully to pully. If the belts start making noise you are either to tight or too loose. Thats how I have always done my belts on any car and haven't had any problems so far. Hope that helps
