Yes get him to do the transmission, also to reverse flush the cooler in the radiator to see if there are any flecks of clutch facings stuck in there. Some shed pieces to block the cooler which robs the lube to the gear train, and disappointment follows.
Does the trans do the 2nd to 3rd gear change OK? If the band needs tightening it will 'flair' (revs up a bit). Depends on the mileage.
