Heat shields were designed for a couple reasons, depending on the application.

One use for them is between the exaust pipe and the floor board. This is to reflect the heat from the pipe away from the floor of the caror gas tank. For some reason people don't like burning their bare feet on the floor of their car. I had a buddy with a Chevette when I was young and it got really hot on the floor where the exaust ran under it. He could have used some heat shields there for sure!

Another use, and the one applicable for the SVX, is to keep debris from making direct contact with a very hot exaust header or near the catalytic converters. This is so your car won't burst into flames when you park it on a pile of leaves or tall grass. Removing these shields is fine as long as you keep the car on clean pavement and don't park it on any leaf piles that may be on the shoulder of the road.
