Yeah, to check the front pulley use white out or a paint pen to make a line across the three layers of the crank pulley (center metal, rubber strip & Outer metal pulley). After driving the car a little, through a period where the PS acts up, check the pulley to see if the line is still lined up.
You can also have someone watch the PS pulley while someone else sits in the idling car and turns the steering wheel lock to lock. The PS pulley shouldn't pause or hesitate at all. If it does, either the belt is shot/loose or the crank pulley is separating.
