$2000-3000 IS a ripoff to do a head gasket on an SVX, which is why I ended up doing it myself. Several shops I spoke to wouldn't even TOUCH the job when I told them what it was, how many miles on the car, etc., and EVERYONE told me the engine has to be pulled to do it, which I didn't believe. I did both head gaskets by myself with the engine in the car, had the heads checked and milled, replaced the front main seals, valve cover gaskets, etc., for about $400. It's been a year now and it hasn't overheated since.
