They get dirt in them. You don't need remove the glass to get them out, just the inside door panel. I used a wire brush and dish soap to clean mine. They look brand new with just a little scrubbing. Dirt and grime, (and probably a bit or organic moss/alge/pond-scum to glue it all together,) tend to build up in the soft fuzz. The pads aren't really felt, but more like velvet.

All you need to remove them are some small pointy tools, like big dental picks and a tiny flat-head screwdriver. Just don't drop them inside your door when they pop out or when you put them back in.
