Then simply paint the exposed edges with a grey or silver paint before applying the new overlay pieces. That way the gaps will not show up at all and because the painted edges will be recessed from the other surfaces, you will not have to worry about the painted surface getting scratched or chipped. I think you can get the best of both worlds that way.
