The transmission guy who checked ours out said that you could tell by swerving from side to side and seeing if the noise varies.
When you turn, the outside wheel spins faster than the other and therefore will make more noise. He could tell straight away that it was the wheel bearing - and which one. Although, it must be very subtle because personally I couldn't hear any difference.
