Your wife may be correct on this. Can't say what a blown diff sounds like, never had one, but would expect the sound coming centrally from under the floor.
My suggestion would be the following; Fold down the rear seat back and push the front passenger seat as far forward as you can. Now sit into, or lie into the rear area while your wife drives the car up the road a mile or two. If it is the wheel bearing, it is so loud you will be definitely able to hear it coming from right or left side. If it is not noticably right or left side, then it is probably the diff.
[PS I would not expect the sounds to be much different, diff or wheel, it's a worn bearing you are hearing]
