If you can get over the "image" problem, don't rule out an early to mid-'90s
van. The space & versatility of a van blows away a wagon, and any SUV. A loaded Dodge Caravan can be had for less than $2,500 in my area. Parts are plentiful, & when you're tired of it you can donate to any organization helping the homeless, so someone can at least live "in a van down by the river".
